Volunteers Needed After Weekend Fires

Northeastern New York not only has suffered the tragedy of a commuter suddenly plane crashing into a neighborhood, but had five additional fires that required assistance. Needless to day, the workers and volunteers have been stretched thin…too thin.

The biggest need of the Red Cross: volunteers. A chapter of the Red Cross of Northeastern New York is standing by to see if they will be able to have enough volunteers available to help an elderly couple who are now homeless after their home burned this weekend. This couple represents 2 of the 22 people displaced by fires within the last few days.

Deadly Fire Caused By A Candle

An apartment on the Upper East Side was set ablaze over the weekend and killed an elderly man. The fire started when a candle was left unattended in the man’s bathroom and fell, reports The New York Times.

candle-fireThe fire started shortly before 2:30 am. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to control the 10th-floor apartment blaze. When officials took the man to the Lenox Hill Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

It is recommended by safety officials that candles not be left unattended, even if one is going to leave the room for just a moment. This weekend is a tragic reminder why this is suggested.
