Weekend House Explosion in Queens

Monday, April 27th, 2009

A woman in Queens’ Floral Park perished this weekend after her home exploded. A gas leak was reported in the neighborhood and was being investigated at the time of the explosion. Three blocks around the home felt the disastrous blast. The woman left behind three children and a husband.

Officials are not sure what ignited the gas, which they state caused the explosion. Their best guess is that a spark from removing a manhole cover in the street may have caused the blast, which badly damaged the two homes on either side of the affected home.

The home in which a gas leak was detected was evacuated. However, it is not standard procedure to evacuate various homes on a block or neighborhood. The gas company investigating the leak was not aware of a leak in the victim’s home.

Officials remind everyone that if one smells a gas leak, evacuate the building you are in immediately.
