Parents at PS 106 in Parkchester are urging the city to replace the trailers that serve as classrooms for their children. An inspection during the fall revealed severe mold growth around the vents and on blackboards and walls in the trailers, and over 100 cats living under them. Some parents claim the mold growth has cause their children to fall ill.

The city says the mold was remediated, the cats were removed, and patches and skirting were placed around the trailer so other critters could not move in. Parents, however, claim the water leak that contributed to the mold damage was not fixed. If this allegation is true, there is no doubt the mold will return again.

Water damage and dampness lead to mold and damage. If mold is not properly remediated, it will come back. If mold is cleaned, but the source of the mold growth is not fixed, mold will continue to be an issue.

Foreclosed Homes For Sale With a Catch

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Downtown Manhattan was packed with house hunters looking for a great deal on a home at an event on East 42nd Street. In the midst of the economic crisis, thousands of families are losing their homes to foreclosures: a bad situation for the displaced homeowners-a good thing for house hunters. Or is it?

The one thing many of the bank-owned homes featured at event had in common is that they were definitely not “dream” homes. Many were vandalized, needed many improvements, and had water or mold damage. The upside of this situation:  some of the starting bids on some of the homes started at just $500.

Water damage, which can lead to mold damage, in a home can be a dangerous situation if not taken care of promptly and properly. If purchasing a home that has experienced water and/or mold damage, it is recommended that one hire a water restoration specialist to estimate the damages the home has suffered and how this can be remedied. A restoration specialist can also assess mold damage to see if the levels of mold are hazardous to humans or pets and to assess the structural damage as a result of the fungus.

Quarry Flood Control Plan for Suffern

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The Mahwah River in Suffern has caused area residents more than its fair share of headaches in the past decades with continuous flooding.

Quarry Ridge, which is near the river, has been purchased by a developer who intends to construct condominiums and divert the flooding river waters to the quarry when the waters are high. The excess water will then return to the water when the river’s waters have receded. It is not certain how much water the quarry can hold.

LoHud.com reports:

“A final draft of plans to alleviate flooding in a village neighborhood by diverting water from the Mahwah River could be completed within six months.

The plans are to send water into a quarry pit adjacent to the river when the threat of flooding is high, then release it when the threat passes.”

The flood and condo plans for the 65-acre quarry are estimated to be ready by October 2009. The mayor and citizens of the town are eager to see plans for flood remediation.

Proper clean-up and remediation are essential after a flood. Floods cannot only damage buildings and personal items, but also cause mold that can further damage if wet items are not dried properly.
