Manolo Blahniks, Jimmy Choos, Guccis, Shoe Wearers, and Shop Owner Victims of a Fire

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

A cobbler’s shop on West 10th Street near Avenue of the Americas in the West Village experienced a fire that was devastating for many. The fire happened in December 2008 and the owner of the shop has not been able to open his doors for business from all the red tape and paper work still pending completion.

Owners of the shoes dropped-off at the shop pass by the shuttered doors and windows in which they are being held. Some of the shoes being repaired are worth as much as $1000 and their owners, reports The New York Times, desperately miss them.

The shop owner misses his work. He does not know when he will be able to attain the 200-plus pairs of shoes that were in the building at the time of the fire. The managers of the building in which his space is rented changed the locks to the shop and have not handed over the keys, preventing business continuity. The building’s management company still needs to make necessary repairs to ensure proper recovery before the doors can open.

Weekend House Explosion in Queens

Monday, April 27th, 2009

A woman in Queens’ Floral Park perished this weekend after her home exploded. A gas leak was reported in the neighborhood and was being investigated at the time of the explosion. Three blocks around the home felt the disastrous blast. The woman left behind three children and a husband.

Officials are not sure what ignited the gas, which they state caused the explosion. Their best guess is that a spark from removing a manhole cover in the street may have caused the blast, which badly damaged the two homes on either side of the affected home.

The home in which a gas leak was detected was evacuated. However, it is not standard procedure to evacuate various homes on a block or neighborhood. The gas company investigating the leak was not aware of a leak in the victim’s home.

Officials remind everyone that if one smells a gas leak, evacuate the building you are in immediately.
