An apartment on the Upper East Side was set ablaze over the weekend and killed an elderly man. The fire started when a candle was left unattended in the man’s bathroom and fell, reports The New York Times.
The fire started shortly before 2:30 am. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to control the 10th-floor apartment blaze. When officials took the man to the Lenox Hill Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
It is recommended by safety officials that candles not be left unattended, even if one is going to leave the room for just a moment. This weekend is a tragic reminder why this is suggested.
